Share Coffee Roasters

Nestled in the town of Hadley in the Pioneer Valley and just over 60 miles from our doors lives Share Coffee Roasters, a small, independent coffee roaster who roasts all of the coffee we grind & brew fresh right in our lobby every morning.

Share focuses on importing high quality coffees from around the world, paying between two and four times the cost of even Fairtrade coffee.  In today’s coffee market, the price per pound for commodity green coffee can dip below what it costs to produce.  By sourcing very high quality coffee and being willing to spend upwards of 400% above the market average for that coffee, Share is helping to support farmers who are putting hard work into growing their coffee.

Once that green coffee arrives at Share, it’s up to the skill of Ken & his team to bring out the very best in those beans. All of their coffee is roasted in a restored Probat coffee roaster from the 1950s, updated with today’s technology. Ken tracks and controls every detail he can during the roasting process, from three separate temperatures and airflow to weight loss after roasting. Once the coffee is roasted to perfection, it’s cooled and bagged, ready for cupping, a term for coffee taste-testing.

Each and every batch of coffee roasted, no matter how closely it follows Share’s roasting parameters, is graded on characteristics such as aroma, body, acidity, and sweetness in a process known as cupping before it can leave their roastery. Once that coffee gets to us, it’s ground immediately before each brew and is on our shelves for at most a little over a week from the time of roasting. This ensures that you have the highest quality & freshest coffee possible, rivaling any high end coffee shop around!

So, next time you’re enjoying a cup of our incredible lobby coffee, know you’re also doing your part to support a local business as well as helping hard-working farmers from around the world.

If you ever find yourself out in Amherst or Northampton, be sure to check out one of their cafes or pick up a bag to take home in our Mercantile.

COOP’s MicroCreamery

An electrical engineer turned hospital administrator, Marc “Coop” Cooper one day decided to learn how to make super premium ice cream, eventually going on to open two popular ice cream shops in the Boston area and winning many awards for his delicious frozen treats along the way. Ice cream, however, is a pretty seasonal business, and Marc wanted to find a way to keep his staff busy and employed in the off-season.

Enter, hot fudge.

COOP’s hot fudge became so popular that Marc spun the hot fudge business off from the ice cream business and went on to innovate from there, creating a salted caramel sauce, cold-brew mocha sauce, and even a vegan hot fudge!

All of COOP’s sauces are made with ingredients you can pronounce, never anything artificial. Fresh cream, cane sugar, butter, chocolate, cocoa powder, and brown sugar are the only ingredients in the Original hot fudge. The secret is in using the highest quality ingredients along with good innovative techniques.

Perhaps even more innovative than the incredible dessert sauces themselves is COOP’s partnership with Project Place’s WOW (Working Opportunities for Women). Project Place is a Boston-based social services agency that promotes a community of hope and opportunity for homeless and low-income individuals by providing the skills, education and resources needed to obtain and sustain employment and housing. Their goal is to end homelessness by providing pathways to attain jobs, housing, & hope. COOP’s became WOW’s first customer back in 2016 and they haven’t looked back since.

Whether it’s the distinctive drip lids or the simple ingredients that first draw you to COOP’s, the absolute deliciousness along with the social good will keep you coming back for more! You can pick up many of COOP’s sauces right in our lobby Mercantile or at many grocery stores throughout New England and beyond. For a wintertime treat, COOP’s also makes a simple & cozy hot cocoa mix that we have available in our Mercantile as well as as part of our Fireside Experience package.

Q’s Nuts

As with many good stories, the history of Q’s Nuts starts with a love story, this one between Beth & Brian (a.k.a Q) Quinn, a pair of high school sweethearts. Q, who was working in a custom motorcycle shop, started roasting nuts at events and outdoor markets out of a mobile nut roaster. A side business and hobby more than anything at this point, when the motorcycle shop Q was working at shut down, Beth & Q decided to turn their side hustle into their full-time work. They soon became known for their incredibly delicious and wholesome snacks and haven’t stopped growing since, now with two retail locations and found in specialty shops throughout the country, including our very own Mercantile.

Hand-roasted in small batches, Q’s Nuts focuses on wholesome ingredients, extremely locally sourced whenever possible with many of their spices coming from Christina’s Spice in Cambridge and their chocolate coming from Taza in Somerville, both barely a two mile walk from their kitchen.

Unlike many roasters, Q’s savory nuts are slow roasted instead of deep fried to bring out the very best flavor as well as preserve the wholesomeness of their nuts.

Q’s sweet nuts, meanwhile, are hand-roasted at a higher temperature and a bit faster in one of two German-built nut roasters, spinning inside a rotating copper bowl which transforms the simple ingredients of raw nuts, organic sugar, and fresh flavors into perfectly-candied snacks.

Whether it’s sweet or savory, Q’s Nuts has you covered with a wholesome & delicious snack! You can pick some up right in our lobby or our online Mercantile, but they’re certainly worth a visit if you’re headed to the Boston Public Market, or if you’re exploring Somerville & Cambridge, check out their main location where they are always roasting up fresh batches of nuts, as well as serving up other local treats (including ice cream!).

Jack’s Snacks

We know that while finding a great local something at our Mercantile to bring back to a friend or family member (or for yourself!) might be high on your list, finding something special for your favorite four legged friend might be even more important! And that’s why we partnered with Jack’s Snacks, a local doggie bakery focused on creating high quality, preservative-free dog treats since 2004.

Located just south of The Lenox in Warwick, RI, Jack’s Snacks was founded by Marni MacLean Karro when she saw a lack in the market for dog treats made with real, whole foods. The ingredient list for all of Jack’s Snacks treats reads like a recipe you’d make right in your own kitchen – whole wheat, oats, peanut butter, whole egg, and more. Everything is pronounceable and something you’d want to eat yourself!

All of Marni’s treats are named after special dogs in her and her family’s lives. Jack’s Snacks itself & their signature Jack’s Nuts About Squirrels treats are both named after the dog love of Marni’s life, Jack, a black lab pitbull rescue who, unsurprisingly, loved both peanut butter and chasing squirrels!

Looking for something a little extra special? Check out Jack’s Snacks doggie cakes made with their signature peanut butter-cream cheese frosting and available for delivery to Boston for that special celebration at The Lenox with your pup!

Next time you’re in our lobby, don’t forget to pick up something special for your favorite canine family member or order right from our online Mercantile!

Our Potter

It’s a bit of a funny thing for us to say as a hotel, that we have a potter, but we’re always looking for local partners to feature in our hotel to connect our guests with the amazing communities and people that surround us. It felt like a perfect match when we stumbled upon Tiffany Hilton Pottery in Florence MA – a six mile drive through the bucolic countryside of the Pioneer Valley from our coffee roasters, Share Coffee in Hadley MA.

Today, the custom mug that Tiffany created for us can be found both in our Mercantile as well as part of our Fireside Experience package where you can enjoy mugs of COOP’s hot cocoa and Seaside Sweets’ S’mores patties besides a roaring wood fire in one of our Executive Fireplace rooms. Forgot to pick up a mug when you were here? Order one today from our online Mercantile!

Tiffany’s light-filled studio inside the historic Florence Brush Factory, makers of the Pro-Brush toothbrush in the 1870s, is where she throws each and every piece of pottery she makes before mixing and applying her own custom glazes and firing in one of her kilns. She even hand-carved the porcelain lion head stamp from our logo that she uses to emboss the base of our custom mugs.

She originally studied fine arts at SUNY New Paltz where she was first exposed to pottery making and eventually started apprenticing for a potter in New Hampshire. Today, she continues that legacy of teaching through both her apprentice, Lucas, as well as 8 week classes she teaches out of her studio.

While her pieces could simply stand unused on a shelf as individual works of art, Tiffany’s intention behind her pottery is for them to be used, shared, and a part of your life, infusing them with deeper meaning each time they are taken out of the cupboard or filled with your morning coffee. So, next time you’re with us, consider picking up one of her beautifully hand-thrown mugs to take a piece of The Lenox & Massachusetts home with you!

You can also view and purchase Tiffany’s work right on her website.

You will FALL in Love!

Summer makes me not to want to cook. As our lives move outside for the few precious months of weather that Boston will allow, so does my desire to be in the kitchen. If it were not for the first touch of a chill in the air these past few days, I would still be in outside mode-hoping not to actually have to think of turning on the stove till the leaves start to fall. Truly can’t remember the last time my oven was preheating- my grill has had all my attention these past few months. Well, when not sitting waterside at Teczmecal or Smith and Wolenskys, to be honest.

Today I am back in the kitchen. What to make? It’s mid-September, still Summer like days, but the cooler evenings and mornings are familiar declarations that Fall is about to consume us. I head to Market Basket. What greets me at the entrance? Apples. An orchard of them. Instantly I think, my Mom’s apple cake. Yum!

I have vivid recollections from almost kindergarten (in full disclosure, it might as well have been fourth grade- but that doesn’t sound as dramatic) of my Mom peeling apples at our kitchen table and the smell of cinnamon and foggy kitchen windows as the heat inside from the stove competed with the coldness of fall outside. As I am sitting writing this I can see my Mom’s very manicured hands working above a bowl that I am staring at now. Her hands were always polished, never an indiscretion of a chip, soft and perhaps a titch worn with blue veins that bared witness to how hard she worked. While a peeler would do for most, not for my Mom. A small, well used knife would allow her an almost uninterrupted peel to free the skin from the apple. It seemed that it was almost a single motion that once the skin was separated, the slices were in the bowl of iced water. She was Ginzu certified before such a thing was ever thought of!

Her labor, as you might have surmised, delivered the best Apple Cake that I have ever put into my mouth. Always moist. Always full of fall flavors. And above all, always served with love that could only be conjured up by someone that makes food the way she lived her life, with unconditional love and pure care.

Make it. And resist the temptation to ask those enjoying it why they haven’t called you in a while.

I love my Mom.

Mom’s Apple Cake

  • 4 cups diced apple
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 eggs
  • 3 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup chopped nuts

Combine the diced apples & sugar, let sit for 30 minutes.

In a bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, salt, & nuts. Whisk together to evenly distribute.

In a separate bowl, combine the macerated apples & sugar, oil, & eggs. Beat to combine.

Pour wet mixture into dry mixture and fold to incorporate.

Pour cake batter into a buttered and floured bundt pan. Bake at 350 until golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean, about 50 minutes.

Mel’s Margaritas

Who doesn’t love a great margarita? Trust me, there is a difference when it’s done right. Growing up, my dad always made them at home, but he would get the mix and add tequila. Frozen or on the rocks, he loved them! I’m not saying that these are bad, I have had them for years and truly enjoyed them. A few years after my introduction to the drink from my father I learned how to make a “perfect margarita” (well, in my mind perfect). I do love a good tequila – Casa Amigos, Don Julio, Herredura are few of my favorites.

There are some key ingredients in making a tasty homemade margarita. Tequila, Cointreau, fresh lime juice and agave, and if I have an orange, I also squeeze it in there. I call this more of a skinny margarita, but trust me it’s delicious. If you prefer to use sour mix, Whole Foods sells a good one in the refrigerated section called Ripe which you can also find in some restaurants around the city. And if you are out and about, spring is here in Boston and nothing is better than getting out of work and going out to a patio and enjoying a good margarita.

I’m only commenting on traditional margaritas here. I know many places offer different kinds of margaritas – spicy, watermelon, strawberry, to name a few. All of which are all good, I just prefer a traditional margarita with salt.

Here is my go to list of my favorite places in the city to grab a margarita:

These places will not disappoint you. Make sure to enjoy a good margarita on Cinco de Mayo! I know I will!

Salud!

Earth Day, Every Day

You made it here

We love nothing more than seeing smiling faces from every corner of the world in our lobby.  The wide range of places our guests have travelled from to stay with us is both exciting and humbling.  We believe travel is incredibly important. It enriches, educates, and entertains.  Simply put, the more people get out and see new places and meet new people, the better we all are for it.

But like everything, there is a cost to travel.  Transportation accounts for over a third of all pollution emissions in the in the US alone.  As a 4th generation family business, that fact is not lost on us.  How can we do our part to help solve this problem?

What are we doing

With Earth Day coming up on Monday April 22nd, The Lenox is purchasing Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) for all guests staying through the weekend, to offset the estimated mileage used to travel to Boston by plane.  It’s our way of saying thanks for coming to Boston and choosing to stay with us. In addition to offsetting travel this weekend, take comfort in knowing that The Lenox already offsets all energy used at the hotel, making your stay 100% carbon pollution neutral!  And we do that every day of the year, and have been for the last 16 years.

Renewable Energy Credits are wind and solar energy credits that can be purchased to offset the otherwise unavoidable use of polluting fossil fuel we all consume for our electricity and transportation. We calculate the amount of energy we consume and then balance that carbon impact with the purchase of clean energy in the United States.

Yes, travel comes with a real impact on the planet, but know that we take that impact very seriously and work to reduce our part. We always continue to look for ways to ensure a sustainable future for all.

Game of Game of Thrones

With the Boston Marathon around the corner, the city is gearing up for one of the most exciting days of the year. The competitive spirit of the Marathon is contagious and has spread to some of our Lenox team! Since we’re not all marathon runners, we’ve channeled our energy into a highly-competitive winner-take-all game…of…Game of Thrones in celebration of the premiere this Sunday of the final season!

In a fantasy football style draft, serious GoT viewers picked characters for their ‘team’ to rack up points throughout the season. Complete with a background of Thrones-themed music and even special edition GoT Oreos, the players successfully drafted 3 players each. Points are awarded for things like characters who are killed off (if you’re a fan you know this is not a tall order) or for killing a ruthless White Walker.

The Lenox team is taking the game very seriously, and points will be updated as battles are won, dragons are reborn, and someone is awarded the iron throne!

Stay tuned for updates as the fierce competition continues…

Real Weddings
Alex & Bart

Alex and Bart were married at The Lenox on a sunny Fall day, Saturday October 13, 2018. Now that Alex has had some time to reflect, she has shared the most memorable moments of their big day with us!

How Did You Meet

We met in college at Wake Forest University through the marching band.

Why Did You Choose The Lenox Hotel For Your Wedding?

We had been wedding venue searching at a variety of establishments for a few months across New England. One day we came in for a glass of champagne at City Table and Taylor happened to be available to show us the space. We fell in love with the Dome Room and the idea of celebrating with our friends and family right here in downtown Boston!

What Was Your Favorite Or Some Of Your Favorite Moments Of Your Big Day? (Saturday October 13, 2018)

The day was so full of love and went by so quickly – it’s tough to pick just one memory! Taking photos on the roof was certainly a memorable experience, as was our awesome wedding band getting the entire group up for “Uptown Funk” along with the speeches made by our closest friends and family at the start of the reception.

Any Advice for Other Couples During the Planning Process or Wedding Weekend?

I think that we found the most important thing to remember is that the wedding is supposed to be fun. Yes, there are a lot of details and a lot of opinions, but if you two can remember that the party’s all about celebrating you and the bond you both have – you’re bound to have a wonderful day.

D&A Catering

We have a few yearly internal traditions where we take time to make sure our staff feel extra-appreciated. We do it so often, in fact, Dan Donahue & Alison Majka developed an internal catering team, D&A Catering back in 2012 to handle most of the cooking for these events based on their shared passion for cooking! To find out more about this dynamic duo, please take a read below:

Q- Where did your love for cooking begin?

Dan – My Mom, just watching her cook from such a young age. She taught me that food is love and is also the great common denominator between people. Everyone needs it. Being the youngest of 8 children, I watched a lot of cooking!
Alison – My Parents. From a very early age, my parents made dinner for me and my three siblings most nights (I know, I know, not nearly as many kids as Dan’s family). They would pour some wine and really enjoyed making a nice meal even if we didn’t appreciate it. It was a treat for us all to sit together and chat about our day.

Q – How old were you when you started cooking?

Dan – It was almost from the time I could reach the counter probably 6, 7, or 8 years old. We would always help – in a big family you always have a job. Alison wasn’t even born when I started cooking, that’s why I’m a much better cook than she is, obviously.
Alison – Someone’s feisty today. Well obviously you’ve had much more time in the kitchen given your age and all but I wasn’t going to bring that up…Anyways, my sister, Sara who is 8 years older taught me how to bake when I was like 5 or 6. We would bake thousands of cookies, pack them up and deliver them to friends and family around the holidays. This is a tradition I’ve held on to and still continue with my friends! Maybe I should write a blog post about Holiday Cookie Delivery too?!

Q- Dan, you mentioned growing up everyone had a job in the kitchen, what was your job?

Dan – Okay Alison, one blog at a time. To answer your question, it would really depend on the day. Usually I was the one who had to dry the dishes or chop the lettuce, not that fancy S*** just iceberg because we had salad every night of the week. It’s funny what you remember, my mother said we couldn’t use a knife because she thought if you didn’t rip it apart with your hands it would wilt. I see Alison shaking her head over there but it is true, ask Chef! Every night we would use two heads of lettuce and it was a deal at .49. Can you believe that, .49 cents?
Alison – I was the youngest of my siblings so they usually made me do the dishes. Actually, they made me unload the dishwasher. I hated unloading the dishwasher, it’s the worst, am I right?
Dan – At least you had a dishwasher…
Alison – Alright, alright and you climbed uphill both ways to school in the snow, I forgot.

Q – Dan, what was your favorite thing your Mom cooked and Alison, your parents?

Dan – Chili. Beef Chili. She would always make it every time my brother would come home from college . There would be a huge pot on the oven every time Paulie came home. Let’s just say there was a line to the bathroom after those meals.
Alison – My Dad would roast a chicken on Sunday nights and it was the best! I have no idea what he did to make it so amazing but it was the most delicious chicken I’ve ever had. The entire house would smell all afternoon while it roasted slowly. Everyone would be home on Sunday nights so it was guaranteed we’d all be together for dinner. Those were my favorite nights.

Q- What is your absolute favorite meal or one dish that you make?

Dan – To eat and cook? Chicken Cacciatore– it’s never the same, I love red sauce and you can put just about anything in it to make it taste a little bit different than the last time you made it.
You can make it spicy or add extra peppers, mushrooms, onions, scallions, celery. You can really add anything to it. My mother used to make it with the whole chicken because it was cheaper but I only use split breasts which by the way if you like a good split breast, go to Market Basket, its only $1.09 a pound. Seriously! Alison, don’t roll your eyes!
Alison – You just have a really strange obsession with Market Basket. The guy loves a deal- but I guess who doesn’t?! I love making Chili. Especially the first chili of the season once the real cold hits. It’s another dish like Dan mentioned, that you can put anything in! I usually like to put a couple different types of meat, peppers, onions, some beer..maybe a stout, all different types of beans and jalapenos – I like it spicy! Chili is fun because you can crack a beer to drink while you let it simmer – it also served a big crowd.

Q- How did D&A get up and running?

Dan – Umm, Alison was bringing in food for the mangers to try and I saw that her culinary skills needed help so I thought I would “teach” her by showing her. D&A was born.
Alison – That’s a cute story but not exactly truthful..
Dan – Well then how did it start?
Alison – Well Dan used to challenge people to cook offs. I think it began long before I started with a Chili Cook Off and Meatball offs, etc. But about 6 years ago, I brought in Chocolate Chip Cookies for the Managers and Dan challenged me to some type of soup off? Dan, do you remember?
Dan – I have no idea what we made but the votes were rigged.
Alison – What he is saying is, I won. Honestly, I think the Managers knew which one was mine and felt bad for me but either way, I’ll take the W!
Dan – Ya exactly, they just felt bad for her. Mine was way better. To prove myself, I challenged her to a Meatball off the following month. The votes were rigged again.
Alison – So long story short, Dan got sick of losing the challenges and we joined forces.

Q-What has been your favorite D&A event/memory?

Dan – OHHHHH boy, the medium rare buffalo chicken drum sticks. We will never live that down. Alison forgot to par bake the chicken so I had to save the day and deep fry them and then bake them, and then that didn’t work so we just threw them away. Colin came to the kitchen and gleefully announced that the chicken was under cooked. All of the guests had one bite taken out of their chicken wing when we looked around the room. We have since learned from our mistakes and take temps on our food before serving! We now carry thermometers with us at all times.
Alison – You really have no memory, huh? I don’t think that’s exactly how it went down but we’ll move on! My favorite D&A event is during Housekeeping Week. For the entire week we celebrate our amazing Housekeeping Staff and on one of the days, Dan and I cook a special lunch and serve all of the staff in City Table! I think employees really love coming through the ‘lunch line’ and seeing Dan in a Chef’s coat yelling out funny things like “more plates on the line” or “Ricardo is here, get him a plate” or if we are really behind he will yell “just one minuteeee, Alison burnt the onion rings” and people laugh. It’s a really fun event and a nice way to show our appreciate for our amazing team!

Dan – We are gearing up for our next event and we’ll be sure to share the pics!

Jane and Jim got married at The Lenox on warm, sunny day on Saturday July 14, 2018. Now that Jane has had some time to reflect, she has shared all the most memorable moments of their big day with us!

The Bride & Groom

Jim and I first met back in high school! We started dating our senior year, and ended up attending different colleges. We did long distance for 5 years before I moved and joined him in Boston. Six years after that, on our 10th anniversary, Jim proposed!

Why The Lenox for Your Wedding?

With many guests traveling from far away, we knew we wanted to have our wedding venue be in downtown Boston. Neither Jim nor I had been to The Lenox before we started our venue hunt. We fell in love with The Lenox from the moment we stepped into the lobby. We loved the warmth and elegance of the hotel, and the Dome Room speaks for itself!

Favorite Moments From Your Wedding Day? (Saturday July 14, 2018)

It’s really impossible for me to choose just one favorite memory from that day, but one that definitely stands out was being introduced as we entered the Dome Room at the beginning of the reception. To see everything we had imagined become a reality – all of our favorite people in that one room with the beautiful table settings, the flowers, and the band – was unforgettable.

Any Advice for Other Couples During the Planning Process or Wedding Weekend?

The day of your wedding, as everyone says, is a blur of nerves and excitement. One thing I would recommend to couples would be to take a moment during the reception to step back and just look around the room together. We did this, and that memory is such a special one for me. To see all of our friends and family on the dance floor laughing and dancing was just amazing. We put so much into planning our celebration, and it was magical to look and see everyone enjoying it!

SURFING WITH SMILES

Craig LeBlanc, Valet Manager

Surfing with Smiles gives those with special needs and abilities the chance to surf for free in a safe environment. Two surfers, Lindsey and Taylor, started this company about 9 years ago to pull the surfing community together and share their love for surfing and the ocean through good vibes and positive energy. You have never seen so many smiles on one beach! It’s such a warm and energetic event that happens a few times each summer. My son Derek and I have volunteered these events for a few years now. It’s a great time and we look forward to these surf sessions every summer.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS

Lisa Burns, Director of Marketing

My involvement with the Special Needs community started when I was in high school – I volunteered with what was then called the BICO program – Bi-County Collaborative. During my study periods I would travel over to our local YMCA and spend time in the pool with the class. It was hard not to create special bonds with some of the students – I sometimes run into several around town and they always say hi and remember the times we spent together – truly remarkable!

During high school, my children were involved in the Special Olympic events that were held at the school and inevitably I would end up helping out. My niece participated in the competition when she lived in town, so it was great to be there and cheer her on. The pride and excitement that these student athletes experience throughout the day is so rewarding to witness. To see the smiles after they have competed and won ribbons, and stand on the podium so proudly – very emotional!

The family tradition was carried on with my godson/nephew Kyle while he was in high school – he was very involved in the organization of the annual Special Olympics & Polar Plunge events. He passed away this Spring and our family all volunteered in his memory at the games in early June – truly an honor and bittersweet without him there with us.

If you’d like to somehow get involved with the Special Needs Community and looking for a volunteer opportunity – here are a couple of links to get you started:

Real Weddings
Sarah & Philipp

Sarah and Philipp got married at The Lenox on Saturday August 27, 2016. Now that Sarah has had some time to reflect, she has shared all the most memorable moments of their big day with us!

The Bride & Groom

Philipp and I met during our undergrad at Boston University. Little did we know, we had actually met each other the previous year, but did not officially get acquainted until a mutual friend made the introduction.

Why The Lenox for Your Wedding?

We chose The Lenox for our wedding venue because we fell in love with the beauty and charm of the hotel. There wasn’t another location that had the same historic, classic and boutique hotel feel. We knew when we stepped into the foyer and Dome Room that there wasn’t a doubt we wanted to host our wedding reception at The Lenox.

Favorite Moments From Your Wedding Day? (Saturday August 27, 2016)

One of the most memorable moments was the entrance into our reception following our happy hour. Everything had gone smoothly and we weren’t worried about anything! The smiles on everyone’s faces as we entered the room and transitioned into our first dance was an incredible memory, as we were surrounded by all of our loved ones.

Local Brews & Bites:
Night Shift Brewing

Over the course of the summer, City Table has been offering a Local Brews & Bites promotion, which features a different local beer each week, paired with a special appetizer created by Chef Sean. We have loved being able to partner with various local breweries, including Lord Hobo and Cambridge Brewing Company, and this month we are partnering with Night Shift Brewing!

Night Shift Brewing is located in Everett, Massachusetts, just about 6 miles from The Lenox. A couple members of our staff actually spent a whole day out in Everett exploring different stores and breweries. Their tasting room is always a fun spot to hang out, with both indoor and outdoor seating, and food trucks almost every day of the week. They also have a “Bring Your Own Food Policy”, so you can enjoy all your own favorite snacks while figuring out which beer is your favorite.

At City Table, the beer and appetizer pairings for the month of August are as follows:

My personal favorite beer is the “Santilli”. It is a smooth-sipping IPA with a massive hop profile. It’s also crisp, tropical, and delicious…at least I think so! Not to mention, this beer was a Bronze Medal Winner in the 2016 World Beer Cup American IPA category.

Like most breweries, Night Shift offers tours, but unlike most breweries, they offer free tours and just ask in return that a donation be made to the Greater Boston Food Bank. This is the perfect way to get a behind-the-scenes look at a popular local brewery, and support a great cause at the same time. Tours are offered Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon, but weekday tours can be arranged on their website if you’re unable to make the weekend hours.

Come join us at City Table this month for some refreshing Night Shift beer and delicious appetizers. We can’t wait to see you!

What To Read This Summer

Reading has always been a huge part of my life – some of my fondest childhood vacation moments were stopping at a local bookstore before we went over the bridge to Cape Cod – and picking out a handful of Nancy Drew mysteries to read on the beach. Below is a list of books I’d like to recommend – I had the pleasure of meeting each of the authors at some literary events over the past few months, with the exception of Georgia Hunter – and I guess that kind of influenced my picks!

________________________________________________________________

The Woman In The Window

by A.J. Finn
This “Hitchcock-like” psychological thriller took me a while to get into and some things were slightly predictable, but I’ll be honest – I was captivated until the surprising end. A.J.’s debut novel has been highly recommended and already in development as a film starring Amy Adams!

If you liked Gillian Flynn’s “Gone Girl” you’ll like this!

We Were The Lucky Ones

by Georgia Hunter
Based on the Kurc family and tracing back to World War II, this book was written by a young local writer, which is what originally drew me to it – and l love stories that intertwine history with a “real” story.

If you liked Anthony Doerr’s “All the Light We Cannot See” you’ll like this!

The Family Next Door

by Sally Hepworth
Written by Australian author Sally Hepworth, this book takes place in a small, perfect town in her native country. Essie seemingly has the perfect life, however when a new neighbor moves in, some shocking secrets come to light.

If you liked Liane Moriarty’s “Big Little Lies” you’ll like this!

When Katie Met Cassidy

by Camille Perri
Truth be told, I have not read this yet – but had the privilege of meeting the author at a recent event and recently finished her debut novel, The Assistants, which I highly recommend. This novel is touted as “a romantic comedy about gender and sexuality, and the importance of figuring out who we are in order to go after what we truly want.”

If you liked André Aciman’s “Call Me By Your Name” you’ll like this!

That Kind Of Mother

by Rumaan Alam
Despite some not so great reviews, I decided to give this book a try, and though I tend to agree with some of the negative comments, I’m glad I stuck with it. Most impressive is that it is written by a man and he truly captured the challenges of motherhood, race and family.

If you liked Camron Wright’s “The Orphan Keeper” you’ll like this!

The Beach House

by Jane Green
I had to choose a good “beach book” from one of my favorite authors and felt this was fitting! When 65 year old Nan decides she needs to save her Nantucket home, she comes up with an unconventional way of doing so. This book has a little of everything – drama, family and mystery.

If you liked Elin Hilderbrand’s “The Identicals” you’ll like this!

I hope these suggestions encourage you to grab a book, sit on a beach (or not…) and enjoy a good read this summer!

Real Weddings
Cara & Wesley

Cara and Wesley got married at The Lenox on Saturday, January 27, 2018. Now that Cara has had some time to reflect, she has shared all the most memorable moments of their big day with us!

The Bride & Groom

My husband Wesley and I met in Chicago around New Years Eve in 2015. I was moving to Boston for school and he was living in San Francisco at the time. Our Mom’s, who are friends, thought we should meet and set us up on a blind date. We hit it off and spent the next three days together before we had to go back to Boston and San Francisco. After five months of dating long distance, Wesley moved out to Boston and six months after that we got engaged!

Why The Lenox for Your Wedding?

Wesley and I lived at the Avalon building next door to The Lenox, and frequently went to City Table and Solas for dinner. We just loved The Lenox Hotel and decided to make an appointment to check out the venue. After meeting with Alison, the wedding planner, we knew that this was the perfect wedding venue for our ceremony. Alison was down to earth and professional, and I knew instantly she was going to be great to work with. Alison made this weekend the most special time of our lives. She knew exactly how to direct the day, anticipating everyone’s needs! I felt so at ease knowing that she was in charge of orchestrating the day.

Another big reason we The Lenox for our wedding was the staff. Everyone at The Lenox Hotel makes you feel so welcome and the customer service is by far the best there is out there! After the wedding weekend was over, all of our guests raved about how wonderful everyone was at The Lenox.

Favorite Moments From Your Wedding Day? (Saturday January 27, 2018)

One of my favorite moments was the first look with Wesley on the rooftop. We lucked out with the weather (that late January weekend) and were able to spend some great first moments together looking out at the city of Boston. Another favorite memory was the ceremony in the beautiful Dome Room. It was so amazing to have everyone you love in one room at the same time. I loved being able to share such a special moment in our lives with our families and dearest friends.

Any Advice For Couples On Their Big Day?

Get a great wedding planner like Alison, first and foremost! And don’t dwell on the small details of planning. The day goes by so fast you won’t event have time to notice. The big decisions that you want to get right are the music, the food, and the photographer. Because once it’s all over, all you have left are amazing pictures that documented it all!

Real Weddings
Samantha & Zach

Samantha and Zach got married at The Lenox on Saturday, June 24, 2017. One year later, Samantha has shared all the most memorable moments of their big day with us!

The Bride & Groom

Zach and I met in November of 2009 while we were both pursuing degrees at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania. One night at a party at Zach’s fraternity house, he asked me to dance and I have to admit I was quite impressed with his dance moves. We survived several years of dating long-distance while I studied abroad in Copenhagen and Zach moved to Atlanta to begin his career. Finally, we decided to get settled in Boston where we both pursued graduate degrees. Zach proposed during a family cookout on Martha’s Vineyard and then we couldn’t wait to start planning our wedding!

Why The Lenox for Your Wedding?

I came to Boston for the first time when I was interviewing for graduate school in 2012, and I stayed with mom at The Lenox Hotel. She immediately fell in love with the Back Bay location, the staff, and the amazing candles in the lobby! When Zach and I first started planning our big day, we knew we wanted a centralized location that was easy to get to for all of our out-of-town guests. The Lenox was the perfect place to showcase the city that we had made our new home.

Favorite Moments From Your Wedding Day? (Saturday June 24, 2017)

There were so many! I loved when Taylor stole us away for a few minutes during cocktail hour to show us the decorated Dome Room. It was so special to be able to see the space before all of our guests entered. Zach loved dancing the night away, of course! We danced with our family and friends to the amazing band, The Soul of Boston.

Any Advice For Couples On Their Big Day?

We highly recommend doing any photos on the Commonwealth Avenue Mall. The brownstones and beautiful trees make for an amazing backdrop, and it’s only steps away from The Lenox! It’s also much less crowded than the public garden, which we thought was nice. Another thing I would recommend is having a few moments alone as a new married couple after the ceremony and before the reception. After our ceremony at Old South Church, Zach and I hopped into a 1937 Cadillac and took a secluded spin around the city before joining all of our guests at the cocktail hour. It was the perfect way for us to catch our breath and enjoy the moment for a couple minutes before celebrating with everyone else.
