Lauren & Greg

Lauren and Greg got married at The Lenox on Saturday, December 2, 2017. Now that Lauren has had some time to reflect, she has shared all the most memorable moments of their big day with us!

The Bride & Groom

Greg and I met our freshman year of college at the University of New Hampshire. We were best friends for years before we started dating shortly after college. We were together for 5 years before Greg proposed in Punta Cana in December of 2016.

Why The Lenox for Your Wedding?

My family and I always loved visiting The Lenox Hotel, especially around Christmas time with the beautiful decorations. Back Bay has always been my favorite area of Boston, so I knew I wanted to get married in a venue there. Upon visiting The Lenox and seeing how beautiful and unique the Dome Room is, I knew it was the perfect place for the gold and white winter wedding I was envisioning.

Favorite Moments From Your Wedding Day? (Saturday December 2, 2017)

We had so many favorite moments from our wedding day! One of the best was walking into the Dome Room for our reception. It was such a transformation from the ceremony and I was so happy to see my vision come to life. The staff at The Lenox Hotel were amazing – Alison was such a pleasure to work with from start to finish and made the planning process so enjoyable. It is such a beautiful and unique venue, there are so many great locations for photos (the roof being one of my favorites), and the service is impeccable!

Any Advice For Couples On Their Big Day?

Enjoy the planning process and the day from start to finish! Everyone told us how quickly it would go by and it certainly did (a great photographer is a must to capture all these moments)!

Will & Jerome

Will and Jerome got married at The Lenox on February 27, 2016 on a cold, but sunny day. Now that they have had some time to reflect on the big day, they shared all the most memorable moments with us!

The Grooms

We met at a tennis social at the Winchester Racquet Club in February 2009. Although we did not play on the same court that night, we noticed each other two courts away and struck up a conversation afterwards. We talked for hours until the club closed and made plans to meet up for tennis and lunch the following day. We’ve been together and playing tennis ever since.

Why The Lenox for Your Wedding?

The Lenox Hotel was recommended to us by our friends Michael and Christina Marko who had their wedding at the hotel. Although we looked at a number of venues, we selected The Lenox Hotel for a number of reasons, including the beautiful Dome Room, the location and proximity to Boston attractions for our visiting friends and family, and the help we received from Alison Majka.

Favorite Moments From Your Wedding Day? (February 27, 2016)

There were many special moments the entire weekend. Having everyone on the dance floor, including my Dad, was so much fun. The ping pong table was an incredible hit that everyone seemed to enjoy. We are grateful that our late friend Jena was able to preside over the ceremony, even after being diagnosed with cancer.

Any Advice For Couples On Their Big Day?

My advice is to not stress over planning the perfect wedding; simply focus on having one that you and your guests will enjoy. Choose quality professionals (i.e., wedding planner, photographer, baker, etc.) and solicit their advice.

Danni and Dereck got married at The Lenox on Saturday, February 3, 2018 on a cold, but sunny day. Now that Danni has had some time to reflect on the big day, she shared all the most memorable moments with us!

The Bride & Groom

My husband and I went to college together in Vermont. He always liked me, bu we never were in the right place or the right time to date. Fast forward 5 years, and he reached out on Facebook when we were both single. Since then we’ve pretty much been inseparable.

Why The Lenox for Your Wedding?

From the moment I stepped into the Dome Room, I knew I wanted my wedding venue to be at The Lenox. I had always liked City Table and City Bar, but the Dome Room sold it. My husband wasn’t swayed as quickly as I was; he liked the Taj. But after our wedding, he said it was the best decision we ever made. We hope to go back every year on our anniversary. The staff at The Lenox are truly impeccable and you can’t beat the location if you are looking for a city wedding.

Favorite Moments From Your Wedding Day? (Saturday February 3, 2018)

There were so many! It started when we arrived at The Lenox. Alison and the rest of The Lenox staff made you feel so special. They greeted us with some really thoughtful treats – that was such an amazing touch. They also made sure everything was coordinated, so we didn’t have to worry about anything. Even during some stressful moments during the wedding, Alison noticed, and made sure everything was okay. We couldn’t be more grateful. Our favorite moment by far was having the most important people in our lives all in one place to celebrate.

Any Advice For Couples On Their Big Day?

Enjoy it. Our wedding was everything we’d hoped. Filled with family, friends, love, support, and so much fun; but it went by in the blink of an eye. Savor every minute because it’s over in an instant. Also eat the food! We were so busy socializing, we didn’t even get to eat the delicious food The Lenox prepared. Our family and friends raved about how it was the best steak they’ve ever eaten. Don’t let it go to waste – or at least get it to go!

#WhatLiftsYou

Have you ever heard of the Nashville Wings? I’m guessing that many of you have and if you haven’t, look them up and you will see thousands of photos of people posing with a 20 foot tall street mural! These amazing wings were created by street artist, Kelsey Montague who is well known all over the globe for her beautiful, interactive murals. Kelsey and her sister/business partner, Courtney travel all around the world creating unique pieces on blank canvases that allow communities to be involved in the process.

Kelsey’s work inspired so many of us on the Lenox Team that we decided we wanted her to create a piece for this year’s Boston Marathon, the finish line is right near the hotel. With the Lenox being just steps from the finish line, we felt that one of her #whatliftsyou murals would be perfect to embody the spirit of Boston and the runners! The #whatliftsyou hashtag encourages people to not only take a photo, but to also openly share what is most important to them in their lives.

We were elated when Kelsey and Courtney agreed to travel to Boston and create a unique piece for us! These sisters are such a fun, genuine and inspiring duo (check out their Instagram) and it was a joy having them with us over the last three days! Watching the artistic process on this 13’x13’ black canvas was absolutely incredible. There are so many subtle touches of the city and marathon incorporated into this mural but you really have to look close. The neighborhood watched the progress over the last couple of days and when it was completed yesterday around 5PM, there was an immediate buzz!

“To me this piece is all about the power, strength and the passion of Bostonians. All my pieces invite a person in to become a ‘living work of art’ but I wanted this piece to take it one step further and to honor the strength of the resilient Bostonian spirit.” –Kelsey Montague

Be sure to learn more about The Montague Sisters here and check out the photos below of our Boston Marathon #whatliftsyou mural! Most importantly, if you are in Boston, come by the Lenox on Exeter Street and see it in person – you will not be disappointed!

Real Weddings
Jacqueline & Will

Jacqueline and Will got married at The Lenox in September 2017. Now that Jacqueline has had some time to reflect on the big day, she shared all the most memorable moments with us!

The Bride & Groom

We first met in 2014, when I moved back home to Massachusetts and I started working at the same company as Will. Don’t worry, there were no broken HR rules. Given the fact that the company has over 150,000 employees, it was lucky that we met and developed a friendship. We remained friends for a long time, and as our relationship continued to grow we realized we were meant to be with each other. Will surprised me with a beautiful proposal at the Brant Point Lighthouse on Nantucket, and we began planning our wedding shortly after!

Why The Lenox for Your Wedding?

We felt it would be important to have a wedding in the city of Boston not only to represent our roots and strong connection to the city, but also because the location would be more convenient for many of our family members and guests coming from out of town. We looked at several wedding venues in Boston, but as soon as we walked into The Lenox we knew we had rediscovered an absolute gem. We “rediscovered” it because my parents actually celebrated their first anniversary at The Lenox back in 1983.

In addition to the sheer beauty of this boutique hotel, The Lenox surpassed all other venues in terms of their attention to detail, exquisite maintenance of the hotel, and the level of care and personal service we received. The welcome packet we received explaining all of the wedding package options was extremely straightforward and organized. We absolutely loved and appreciated how much was already included, from their partnership with Dessert Works Bakery for the cake, to the table numbers, and even the card box. All of the little details were taken care of! It was an absolute pleasure to work with all of the staff, but especially Taylor Marshall, who was there to answer all of our questions whether in person, on the phone, or over email. Our guests were floored by the beauty and ambiance of the venue, the lovely rooms, the gorgeous Dome Room where our reception took place, and people are even still raving about the food they ate at our wedding!

Favorite Moments From Your Wedding Day?

We had so many favorite moments from our wedding day. We treasure our beautiful Greek Orthodox ceremony and will never forget it. A fun and lively moment during the reception was when the Greek line dancing spilled out of the ballroom into the hallway of the hotel and back again. Also, we had a rainy day thanks to Hurricane Harvey, but the rain let up just long enough that we were able to sneak up to the rooftop of The Lenox to snap a few photos later in the night and take in the gorgeous city view. The photos do not do the roof justice. The view from the top is incredible, and we felt like we were on top of the world. It was a very special moment.

Any Advice For Couples On Their Big Day?

When it comes to choosing a venue, pick one that is organized, responsive, and attentive to your ideas and requests. If you do that, there is much less to worry about knowing you are in good hands, and you can just relax, take everything in, and most of all enjoy yourselves on your wedding day! The day goes by in a flash, so make sure you set aside some time to soak it all in and be in the moment.

The Bride & Groom

Will and I met on Tinder believe it or not! On our first date Will invited a friend to tag along because he thought he was being catfished!

Why The Lenox for Your Wedding?

We wanted a venue in Boston that was unique but still classic and romantic. When we entered the lobby of The Lenox, it was love at first sight. We were blown away by the gorgeous Dome Room and how friendly and accommodating the staff was. The wedding package included everything we wanted and more! The day of the wedding, my bridal suite, the room for groomsmen, the ceremony and reception all took place on the 2nd floor. This made logistics and planning SO much easier. We also didn’t have to pay anything for transportation!

Our wedding day was so unbelievably perfect and that is in large part due to The Lenox Hotel and their amazing staff. They truly went above and beyond to make our day so special. We can’t recommend The Lenox enough!

Favorite Moment From Your Wedding Day?

Ah! There are so many. I would have to say one of my favorite moments was our first look on the rooftop of The Lenox. Being under The Lenox sign against a stunning city backdrop as we saw each other for the first time is pretty hard to beat!

Any Advice For Couples On Their Big Day?

Savor the moments and try not stress! The day goes by so fast, so enjoy it and don’t let the little things bother you. All of your favorite people are under one roof to celebrate your love! It is bound to be one of the best, happiest days of your life.

Real Weddings
Ali & Andy

The Bride & Groom

I met Andy while we were both studying abroad in Europe. I was studying in London and he was in Florence, Italy. We met through mutual friends right underneath The Duomo – the enormous cathedral towering over the heart of the city. We hit it off the night we met and ended up seeing each other in several European cities over the following four months. Upon returning to the US, we quickly realized how much we cared for each other, and decided to take our relationship to the next level and be boyfriend and girlfriend. I am from the Boston area and went to school in upstate New York, and Andy is from Fairfax, Virginia. We dated long distance for two years as I finished college, and then I moved down to Arlington, Virginia to be with Andy who was working in Washington, DC. Three years later, we traveled back to Florence and Andy proposed right in front of The Duomo, the exact spot where we first shook hands, five and a half years later.

Why The Lenox?

Choosing The Lenox for our venue was the best decision we made. We knew we wanted to get married in Boston (my hometown!) and as soon as we walked into The Lenox, we felt at ease and loved how elegant and charming it is. But as soon as we saw the Dome Room, we knew with 100% certainty that this was the place for us. Domes seem to be a theme in our relationship, and we both knew we just had to get married under that gorgeous dome. It feels European in a way, and very classy, sophisticated, and elegant without being over the top. We felt completely at home there, and couldn’t wait to plan the whole day.

Any Stressful Moments During the Planning Process?

I found wedding planning to be an absolute pleasure. I enjoyed every moment of it and got a majority of it done within the first few months of being engaged. Andy was incredibly helpful too! It was so much planning our day together. We also hired some incredible people who were a pleasure to work with. And my philosophy is that I hired professionals and I let them do their job! So, I didn’t have any really stressful moments. Just excitement and anticipation leading up to the big day!

The Big Day – September 9, 2017

The entire day was so wonderful and so perfect for us. From the moment we checked into the hotel, we were giddy with excitement for all that was to come. Alison Majka did a phenomenal job throughout the whole process and throughout the whole weekend with the most thoughtful touches. Waiting for us in our suite were our favorite snacks and beverages with a sweet card from Alison. The day of the wedding was amazing. Getting ready in my suite with all my girls, putting my dress on, seeing my Dad, walking down the aisle with the both my mom and my dad, seeing Andy in his tux waiting for me at the end of the aisle, exchanging our personal vows, Andy breaking the glass (he had a great stomp!), taking photos in Copley Square, our first dance, the Hora and going up in the chars, and taking photos up on the roof with the red Lenox letters behind us – these were all such incredible moments that made up the most wonderful day.

We also had an incredible band and that made all the difference in the world! And when we got back to our suite at the end of the night, Alison had printed out a photo of Andy and me from right after the ceremony, and she put it in a card for us with a sweet message. The whole team at the hotel and the entire experience truly exceeded our expectations.

Any Advice For Newly Engaged Couples?

Enjoy the process of wedding planning. It is such an exciting and wonderful time and it goes by so quickly. Also, I felt very present the whole day and I took moments to look around, take a deep breathe, and just take it all in. It is the most special day being surrounded by family and friends, marrying the love of my life! There is nothing better than that! Also, hire a videographer. It was something we did pretty late in the game because we weren’t sure we had the budget for it (and honestly weren’t sure it was a necessary expense), but having a video is so priceless, and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched it with a huge, goofy grin on my face.

The Clash of the Ash!

The crazy sport of Hurling (not to be confused with that Olympic sport with brooms!) has been played in Ireland for over 2,000 years, and is considered one of the fastest sports on earth.

Hurling is played on a field larger than an American football field, with 2 teams. Each team has 15 players and they use wooden sticks made of ash (hurley) to hit a small ball (a sliotar) either through the goal posts for 3 points, or over the crossbar for 1 point. Hurling is the 2nd most popular sport in the country behind Gaelic Football, and culminates in the All-Ireland final every September, where two counties battle for the Liam McCarthy Cup in front of 80,000 fans.

And now, it’s coming to the legendary Fenway Park in Boston on November 19th – for tickets and information – click here! Hmmm….so how is this crazy game with 30 men with sticks going to be played on a baseball field? Well, with several modifications! Because a baseball field is a lot different (and smaller) than a traditional hurling pitch, the games at Fenway Park will be played with 11 players per team. Points can only be scored through the goalposts and not over the crossbar. Even with these changes, it’s sure to be a fantastic day at the ballpark, and a great way to experience Gaelic Games first-hand!

I’m going to regret this…but this is me with the Liam McCarthy Trophy at the grand old age of 11.

Real Weddings
Jennifer & Michael

The Bride & Groom

Jennifer and Michael met in San Francisco in 2013 over wine and cheese at a local wine bar. Jen being from New England and Michael, a San Franciso native, but also a Boston College alum, made for an easy conversation full of experiences that each had shared during their time living in Boston. Although they are worlds apart when it comes to San Franciso and Boston sports loyalty, they immediately knew that there was something real between them and began the start of something great.

Why The Lenox?

Jennifer has always loved The Lenox. It’s the quintessential Boston hotel. The charm, architecture, and location in the Back Bay are really the perfect combination for a wedding and reception. This, along with Michael’s California family and friends who are not familiar with Boston, made for the perfect destination for both sides. Jen and Mike met the staff at The Lenox, specifically Alison, whose presentation made their venue decision a simple choice.

The Big Day – September 3, 2016

Jennifer began her day as most brides do with hair and makeup along with her matron of honor and members of the bridal party in the Judy Garland Suite. Champagne was flowing to ease those wedding day butterflies. Michael, on the other hand, began his morning with a run along the Charles River with this best man to work out those jitters. He the met his buddies for a few beers and photos in The Lenox Board Room. Once ready, they separately made their way over to St. Ignatius Church at Boston College to make it official!

After a beautiful ceremony, the couple hopped on the T at Boston College along with their photographer, matron of honor, and best man, and made their way over to the Boston Common all while taking a lot of pictures on the train amongst the riders and people of the city. It was a fun adventure they will never forget and now have the pictures to prove it!

The Lenox had everything taken care of for Jen, Mike, and all of their guests. The cocktail hour and the reception went off without a hitch. Drinking, dancing, pictures, and amazing food (customized just for them) were not in short supply. “Top it off with photos on the roof and TRULY amazing service from everyone were experiences that we can’t forget”.

Memorable Moments

“Where to begin? Mike squeezing my trembling hand at the altar in the church, taking amazing photos while riders were gawking at us on the T, crossing the street hand in hand at the Public Garden while dodging traffic and tourists but smiling ear to ear, having a beer in the bridal suite before the wedding reception to get a sane moment, walking into the ballroom and seeing all of our loved ones there, and of course taking a moment to speak and hug each guest that came to celebrate with us on that day. We are lucky and grateful for that. Fast forward one year later, we celebrated our anniversary with our mini wedding cake provided that day and it was shockingly DELICIOUS!”

Wine Down at City Table

After working in food and beverage here at The Lenox Hotel in Boston for almost 11 years, I have learned many things; one of these things is that the best way to complete a meal is with a nice glass of wine. Our wine list at City Table and City Bar has a variety of selections – something for everyone and every palate. We are excited to have wine from places all over the world, including, but not limited to Argentina, Spain, Germany, and Italy. If you’re more interested in domestic wines from places like Oregon and California, don’t worry, we have plenty of those as well.

We always try to keep the list fresh (no pun intended) by switching out the selection with every season. As we enter the cooler temperatures of Autumn and (before you know it) winter, our wine list will be focused less on the crisp “porch wines”, such as Rosé, and more on the fuller-bodied reds to warm you up throughout the brisk Boston winter. The first of these wines that comes to mind is the Raymond Cabernet, which is a rich and bold red wine from California. This wine can either be enjoyed on its own or paired with one of Chef’s delicious steak dishes, specifically the pan-seared filet mignon. If fuller red wines are not always your thing, our bottle of La Capra Loca, which directly translates to “the crazy goat”, is a medium-bodied Spanish red wine that should be just to your liking. However, our list of red wines doesn’t stop there! We have plenty of Pinot Noir, Malbec, and Bordeaux selections to choose from.

revolution

Though fall and winter definitely bring cooler temperatures, it is definitely a myth that white wine cannot be enjoyed during these months. The MacMurray Chardonnay, and oaky white wine from Russian River Valley, California has been a favorite of many of our guests, and also one that I would recommend for white wine lovers in the fall. The hints of vanilla and citrus allow the MacMurray to be enjoyed with a number of our fall dinner entrées, including the Roasted Chicken with apple slaw and carrot purée, or the pan-seared scallops served over chorizo and corn casserole.

And lastly, what would a wine list be without a little bubbly? Whether you are enjoying a glass with our berry shortcake or celebrating a special occasion, everyone needs a little sparkling wine in their lives!

Want to make your own opinion on our new wine list? Come on over to City Table!

Cheers!

Fallon & Phil

The Bride & Groom

Fallon and Phil met online dating. She, getting her undergraduate degree at Northeastern and he, getting his MBA there at the same time. The pair really clicked over their first few dates and here we are today!

Why The Lenox?

“At every venue we visited before The Lenox, we left feeling more confused and overwhelmed than we had felt when we arrived. At The Lenox, we were warmly greeted and as we learned more about the wedding package they offered, the more confident and excited we felt. Everything was straightforward and they graciously answered all of our questions. The location was ideal given that we had so many people traveling in from out of town and December in New England can be unpredictable at best. We immediately knew we were in good hands at The Lenox, so the decision was an easy one”.

The Big Day – December 3, 2016

Fallon and her bridal party started the day in the Penthouse Suite enjoying some breakfast, coffee, and bubbly while Phil and his groomsmen prepped for the day (while watching football of course) in the second floor Boardroom.

In the early afternoon, Fallon and Phil met on The Lenox’s rooftop surrounded by a beautiful cityscape for an intimate first look. Family and friends then gathered for wedding party and family photos at Old South Church where the couple would later exchange vows.

Post-ceremony, guests headed from the wedding venue back to The Lenox for cocktail hour where they enjoyed drink, hors d’oeuvres, and live entertainment by CJ the Piano Man. Following cocktail hour guests headed across the hall to the Dome Room which was decorated in beautiful hues of winter whites, reds, and greens. For dinner, guests enjoyed some seasonable favorites including a Wild Mushroom Ravioli appetizer followed by a choice of Braised Beef Short Rib or Grilled Local Scallops.

Memorable Moments

“After a day full of preparation and anticipation, Taylor led me up to the roof of The Lenox where I saw my fiancé facing the city skyline. Our first look was so memorable given that we were surrounded by the city we love, celebrating our love. This backdrop made for some of my favorite photos of the day”.

“After our ceremony concluded at Old South Church, Phil and I headed straight back to The Lenox ahead of our wedding party to the sounds of church bells ringing. It was a magical first few moments of being married, surrounded by Christmas lights and decorations, and being congratulated by passers-by”.

Nitro Cold Brew

Not much evokes the feeling of summer quite like starting your day off with a delicious iced coffee. And what better way these days than with a cup of cold brew on nitro? To that end, we got together with our incredible coffee partner, Share Coffee Roasters from Hadley, MA, to find a way to bring incredible cold brew coffee right to our hotel.

Enter, our new coffee station. With a nitro cold brew keg built right in, you’ll be able to start your day off right with a fresh cup of locally roasted & cold brewed iced coffee on nitro, without ever having to leave our lobby!

According to Ken, owner of Share Coffee Roasters, the thing that makes their cold brew so awesome is that they don’t source less expensive or older beans for their cold brew, but use the same meticulously sourced single origin beans that are used for their hot coffee. The cold brew is then double filtered. Serving it on nitro enhances the natural sweetness and body of the coffee – give it a try black, you might be surprised!

Real Weddings
Alicia & Mark

The Bride & Groom

Alicia met Mark at work she was really interested in him, but he was “trying to be professional” and didn’t ask her out for about a month. Mark eventually took Alicia to Salem, MA for their first date in early February. It was freezing and stormy and against her better judgment he lured her to Marblehead Point in the pitch black! It was love from the on! Funny enough, their baby girl, Everly was born 4 years to the day of their first date on 2/16/17.

Why The Lenox?

Both Alicia and Mark lived in Back Bay and had been to The Lenox for drinks at City Table and food at Solas. Mark’s family stayed at the hotel a few times when they visited and everyone loved the atmosphere of the venue. Mark was also obsessed with the lobby bathrooms. “The setting was perfect for our December wedding, cozy and felt like home while also providing our out of town guests with the true Boston experience”.

The Big Day – December 19, 2015

The guests arrived the day before the wedding to relax and settle in! Guests swung by for a bite and drinks in Solas to celebrate. “Alison truly made the start of our weekend so special by treating us to a few drinks!” The wedding ceremony took place at Saint Cecilia’s earlier the next day. “I was fashionably late (due to photos) so the groomsmen brought bags and bags of Junior Bacon Cheeseburgers from Wendy’s to calm their nerves (or hangovers). During the ceremony, Mark actually stepped on and tore my dress loud enough for the guests to hear”.

After the ceremony, they went over to Commonwealth Ave and the gardens to take photos before returning to the hotel. They were so excited to join their guests that they ended up hurrying through some of their final photos to crash the cocktail hour. Alicia and Mark had the most amazing time at their reception. The couple decided on a New England style reception, so they kicked everything off with lots of dancing. “Later in the evening, the dancing turned to stomping and the signing turned to screaming, but we had the time of our lives”.

The Bride’s Memorable Moments

In addition to the above…

“The toasts were very memorable…my dad, my “men of honor” (my brothers), and Mark’s best man (his brother)”.

“The morning of the wedding, I went running along the Charles and apparently Mark had the same idea. We saw each other, and Mark pretended like he didn’t, because we weren’t supposed to see each other until the ceremony”.

“Father John is from Quincy and has a wicked thick Boston accent. Half of the guests were from Ohio or somewhere in the Midwest, so they thought it was hilarious to hear him call Mark “Mahhhhk”.

“I was so nervous the morning of the wedding, but the basket of goodies and drinks from you and Mark really calmed my nerves. It was also great to have my puppies with me! Mark loved the Board Room or “mans room” as he calls it. The beers and snacks helped him and the guys get excited for the day”.

“We always talked about how we would never have the opportunity to have all our friends and family together like that again. It was amazing!”

“We had a blast at our tasting and the wedding dinner did not disappoint. Our guests loved the dinner. We even heard stories of people stealing others’ plates! After the wedding, we kept it pretty classy and headed over to Whiskey’s for some late night. People were horrified that I wore my wedding dress into the bar!”

Rooftop Garden

Nothing says summer like freshly picked herbs, and as a chef who has a passion for gardening, growing herbs just seemed like the logical choice. At The Lenox, we are fortunate enough to have the perfect place to do so-11 stories up on our rooftop. A few weeks back we undertook the project of getting our little garden going. Armed with 4 fir planters, some organic soil, compost and some beautiful basil, thyme, mint and oregano, we began.

As the plan was coming together, it occurred to me that filling our planters from the bottom up with soil would have made them unreasonably heavy, but what to do? I reached out to some gardening friends and was given many suggestions as to what to place in the bottom of the planters. Ideas ranged from packing peanuts (that seemed a bit messy), rocks (too heavy), pine cones (not many to be found in the back bay) and empty water bottles. Water bottles? Perfect! Our guest room water bottles are made from almost all plant based materials. In two days, we were able to gather 300 empty water bottles from guest rooms and business meetings, and after a quick wash we filled the planters about halfway up. In went the dirt, a mix of organic potting soil and compost, and finally the herbs.

The basil and mint, which are fast growers, have doubled in size in the past 2 weeks. The thyme and oregano are not far behind. As the herbs get bigger and begin to flower it is our hope that our native bee hive (we have an apiary on the other side of the roof) will seek to pollinate in our garden.

The Webster Dictionary defines the word legend as “a person that inspires”. Being Bostonians, we tend to relate the word “legend” to sports. Bobby Orr, Larry Bird, or David Ortiz come to mind, but the list goes on – how blessed are we!

With this definition in mind, a legend is a person who sets themselves apart. Through their passion, zeal, and their unwavering commitment to what they do and are, they rise above to be remembered and emulated. At Saunders Hotel Group (SHG) we work with legends, and legends in the making, every day. Day in and day out, shoulder to shoulder, we inspire each other to be the very thing legends are made of – striving to be nothing short of the best in class.

Last week for the first time ever, we celebrated those legends that have been with SHG for over 20 years (one for 66 years!) what a celebration it was. Our 27 Legends come to us from 9 different countries, span 11 different hotel departments across all of SHG’s properties, and have a combined experience in hospitality of over 800 years! Hospitality is a profession that has a notoriously high turnover rate, so when over 15% of the workforce has a 20+ year tenure, well, we consider that a remarkable achievement.

But this achievement is not by chance. Roger A. Saunders founded the Saunders Hotel Group 66 years ago, and rose to become one of the most respected hoteliers in the country. While his accomplishments are too many to list, I believe that empowering and creating our Legends is what he is most proud of. The foundation of SHG is that our guests’ experience will never exceed our employees’ experience, and Mr. Saunders has truly lead by example by making each of his team members an extension of his family.

Thank you, Legends of SHG, for the continued laughter, never-ending hard work, and endless inspiration!

Real Weddings
Elizabeth & Michael

The Bride & Groom

Elizabeth and Michael met at work, at athenahealth. Mike sat directly behind her and they were work friends for over a year before they dated. They always knew they had chemistry. Then one night when they were both out with their friends separately, they ended up running into each other coincidentally in Fenway (this was before they ever texted or called each other). From then on, they knew it was meant to be.

Why The Lenox?

They chose The Lenox as their wedding venue because several years prior, Elizabeth’s work held an event in the Dome Room. She thought it was the most beautiful spot in Boston that she had ever seen. Elizabeth remembers saying that day “this would be an amazing spot for a wedding”. The Lenox is her favorite venue. “Everyone was so incredible and they treated us like royalty! Plus, it smells amazing in the hotel!”

The Big Day – July 16, 2016

Elizabeth spent the morning getting beautified while sipping bubbles in the Penthouse Suite with her bridesmaids. Mike relaxed with his groomsmen, also drinking bubbly, in one of our corner suites. The couple enjoyed a first look outside the hotel on Commonwealth Avenue, followed by group photos. Guests then filled the Dome Room for the ceremony where beautiful blush flowers hung from the ceiling as a stunning backdrop for the emotional vows.

During cocktail hour, guests enjoyed food and drinks while listening to CJ the piano man. For dinner, their guests enjoyed a summer salad with berries and a sesame orange vinaigrette, followed by a choice of Crystal Valley Chicken or New York Sirloin.

Memorable Moments

“Every moment was memorable. It was the best day of my life for so many reasons. Walking across Boylston St. to take pictures on Commonwealth Avenue made me feel like a movie star. Taking photos on the roof after we were married was our little escape to soak it all in. Getting ready in the bridal suite was so much fun. Literally every detail and moment of that day was perfection”.

Ashley & John

The Bride & Groom

Ashley and John met at a Fourth of July party at their groomsmen, John Gallagher’s home in 2009. Ashley had been friends with John’s friends for years, and never met John. John was manning the keg and within moments of meeting him she told him she thought he was overfilling cups, and causing excessive spillage. He gave it right back to her and told Ashley that his mom taught him to poor a proper pint. And they continue to banter to this day.

Why The Lenox?

The Lenox Hotel was a special place for their family because John’s grandparents used to come for drinks when City Table was a piano bar called Diamond Jim’s. The Lenox was instant comfort for Ashley and John and they were in love with the venue at first sight just sitting by the lobby fire. It was a combination of refined/relaxed surroundings, exemplary service, and genuine kindness from the staff. They knew they could be themselves at The Lenox and get a wedding that was elegant, fun, and simultaneously classic and modern.

The Big Day – June 4, 2016

John and his groomsmen got ready and had photos taken in the Board Room, while Ashley and bridesmaids were in the Wedding Suite! Their ceremony was held in the Dome Room and officiated by their close friend, Sean. The end of the aisle was planted with paper birch trees that their parents’ yard after the wedding.

For dinner, the space was beautifully set with champagne linens, walnut Chiavari chairs, and warm uplighting! Guests enjoyed a crisp summer salad and a Braised Beef Short Rib for an entrée.

In keeping with the bride’s Brazilian roots, guests were given small boxes of delicious Brazilian chocolates as wedding favors. After dinner, guests danced the night away and enjoyed a night cap at City Bar.

Memorable Moments

“I”ll never forget the way our reception went to 0-60 and that dance floor was on fire instantly. It was so great. We put a lot of thought into the day and tried to make it so personal. I loved seeing it all come together. From my grandfather’s tie on my bouquet, and my father’s pocket watch as something borrowed, to the cake topper that echoed a piece of art we’ve had in our home for years, to the Beyoncé and Kanye napkins. The toasts were incredible and I’ll be eternally grateful to Sean for agreeing to marry us. We were just so happy all day. You let us do our thing and make it special and we love you for that.”

Real Weddings
Jolie & Nicole

The Brides

On December 5, 2015, Nicole and Jolie first met during what they thought to be just a typical job interview (Nicole as employer and Jolie as prospective employee). But what they didn’t realize is that the two would later realize to be each other soul mates. After a few months of getting to know each other they finally gathered enough courage to disclose that they were interested in pursuing something. It became apparent that Jolie would have to quit her job (yes, without ever having been on a date), and so their adventure began.

Why The Lenox?

A few months after first meeting, Jolie and Nicole had their first date in City Table. And then on February 3rd, 2016 Nicole proposed to Jolie in the Penthouse Suite on the 11th floor of the hotel, so it was a no-brainer that the Lenox would be the perfect venue in Boston for their wedding celebration.

The Big Day – December 10, 2016

Fast forward to their wedding day- Jolie and Nicole along with their wedding party prepped for the day in the Back Bay Suite. The girls got ready together but dressed separately prior to doing their first look in the Penthouse Suite.

At 5:30pm Jolie and Nicole’s closest friends and family gathered in the Dome Room for a traditional Jewish wedding ceremony. The space beautifully decorated in whites and silvers set the scene for a winter wonderland. Jolie and Nicole recall one of their favorite moments “when we tried to break the glass during our ceremony but were not able to because we were wearing Jimmy Choos.”

Post-ceremony guests enjoyed passed hors d’oeuvres, a Mediterranean display and a mini slider bar during cocktail hour while the newlyweds made their way around the Lenox taking bridal party and family photos.
Meanwhile across the hall the Dome Room was busy being transformed into what Jolie and Nicole describe as their “fairytale wedding décor- thank you to Beach Plum Floral and the Lenox.”

Doors to the reception opened at 7:00pm and the night kicked off to a traditional Jewish hora to get guests up and on the dance floor.

Dinner began shortly thereafter with a Fresh Mozzarella & Tomato salad, followed by a choice of two signature dishes- Crystal Valley Chicken or a 12 ounce New York Sirloin.

Following dinner the party continued under the bright lights of the Dome with dancing and music provided by Jeffrey Durand of Beat Train Productions.

Beekman 1802

What happens when you take two down-on-their-luck New Yorkers and move them to a goat farm in rural Sharon Springs? You get Beekman 1802, a luxury lifestyle brand devoted to their neighbors, their products, and their employees. During the 2008 recession, both Brent Ridge and Josh Kilmer-Purcell lost their jobs. Brent, a physician and the VP of Martha Stewart Healthy Living, and Josh, an advertising executive, owned the Beekman 1802 farm as a weekend retreat in upstate New York. Instead of giving up the farm when they lost their jobs, they turned it into a working goat farm with the help of neighbor, Farmer John, and soon morphed it into a thriving lifestyle brand. That transformation was documented on their reality TV show, The Fabulous Beekman Boys, and helped along by their win of season 21 of The Amazing Race.

When we started sourcing out a new bath amenity partner, we did not have to look far to find Beekman 1802. Just a few hours’ drive from Boston, a team from The Lenox headed out to meet Brent & Josh at their home in Sharon Springs. After connecting, we realized that both of our philosophies were so aligned that we had to work together. Whether it’s our sourcing coffee from a small roaster in Western Massachusetts instead of a big chain, or Beekman 1802 using their soap maker’s daughter to pour their candles, we both strive to support our local communities.

Courtney & Andrew

The Bride & Groom

Courtney and Andrew first met at a local college Irish Pub that the two frequented many times before finally running into each other one day. Seven years and a lot of life changes later Andrew popped the question on a romantic New York City weekend getaway. Shortly after, the two started planning their big day back home in Boston.

The Big Day – August 6, 2016

While Courtney and the girls got ready for the day in the wedding suite, Andrew and the groomsmen dressed in the Boardroom. “Getting ready all together at the hotel was so much fun and great way to get excited for the big day”. At 3 o’clock that afternoon Courtney, Andrew and their closest friends and family met at St. Cecilia’s Parish in the Back Bay neighborhood.

Post ceremony, guests headed back to the The Lenox Hotel from the wedding venue to continue the festivities. Cocktail hour began at 6 o’clock in the Heritage and Copley rooms followed by dinner and dancing in the Dome Room which was beautifully decorated in cashmere bridal satin linens and gold chiavari chairs.

Dinner began with a seasonal salad and a choice of Crystal Valley Chicken or New York Sirloin. After dancing the night away to the live entertainment provided by Hank Agency’s “Honey Train”, guests were invited to a night cap downstairs at Solas Irish Pub.

Memorable Moments

“My favorite memory was seeing my future wife walking down the aisle and smiling so happily.” – Andrew
“Dancing into the reception and feeling so much love and warmth from our family and closest friends.” – Courtney

Real Weddings
Katie & Dan

The Bride & Groom

Katie and Dan first met working together in Boston at Pricewaterhouse Cooper. The pair dated for about two and half years before Dan proposed down by the waterfront.

Why Boston?

“We knew we wanted to get married in Boston since that was where a lot of our family and friends were and then for my family flying in we wanted to be close to downtown. I had stayed at the Lenox before with my family and loved it so it was the first place I thought of when we started looking at wedding venues.”

The Big Day – June 11, 2016

120 of Katie and Dan’s friends and family gathered under the gilded Dome to celebrate their nuptials. Escorted by her Dad, Katie walked down the aisle to the music of Larry Chaplin’s String Trio. The party continued across the hall from the Dome Room with passed hors d’oeuvres, an Artisan Cheese Display and live music provided by pianist Curtis Jones (this feature is included in the Lenox Wedding Package). Doors to the Dome Room opened back up at 7:00pm welcoming guests to a champagne toast and three course dinner set under the warm lights of the gilded Dome. Following dinner, guests danced and congaed the night away.

Memorable Moments

“Probably my favorite time on the big day was when we went up to the roof, just us and the photographer. We were having so much fun dancing with everyone and running around downstairs during the reception but to be able to go up to the quiet and dark of the roof (and the cool air!) during the middle of it all and be alone was very special. It was an amazing view and a great photo spot.”
